Why Skipping First-Frame Prep Breaks Motion Control
Kling Motion Control reads two signals: body pose and silhouette in your still, and temporal motion in your reference video. A standalone character photo gives strong identity but weak scene alignment. The reference video carries the motion path, but its opening frame shows a different person in the lighting, wardrobe, and camera distance you want in the final clip.
Without a composited first frame, the model blends those mismatched signals. Common symptoms include feet sliding on the floor plane, arms crossing through the torso, face drift on close portraits, and wardrobe colors that do not match the reference environment. Teams often blame the motion library or orientation toggle when the real issue is that the still never matched frame zero of the reference clip.

Step 1: Capture the First Frame of Your Reference Video
Start with the motion you want to transfer, not the character you want to animate. Open the reference clip in any player that supports precise scrubbing. Pause on the first frame where the performer is fully in frame and the motion has not yet accelerated.
Export options that work:
- Screenshot at native resolution (no browser zoom)
- One-frame export in a desktop editor (Premiere, DaVinci, CapCut)
- CLI frame grab with ffmpeg (one-frame export from your reference clip)
- Limbs are readable, not blurred by motion
- Feet contact the ground plane you want in the final clip
- Camera angle matches the social placement (9:16 vertical vs 16:9 landscape)
- No heavy letterboxing unless you plan to crop the still
Step 2: Prepare Your Character Reference Photo
Your character still should answer identity questions the composited frame will need: face geometry, hair, skin tone, wardrobe silhouette, and any props the performance requires.
Recommended character reference properties:
- Front or three-quarter angle that matches the reference frame facing direction
- Even, soft light (diffused, not harsh rim)
- Plain or simple background (the scene comes from frame zero, not this photo)
- Full torso or full body when the reference motion uses legs
If you lack a real photo, generate a neutral portrait on Nano Banana Pro or Kling 3.0 Omni Image first, then use that output as reference 2 in the swap step.
Step 3: Replace the Performer with Nano Banana Pro
Open Nano Banana Pro in Image Studio. This is an image edit job, not a fresh text-to-video generation.
Step 3a: Upload reference 1 = the first frame from Step 1 (reference-frame-0).
Step 3b: Upload reference 2 = your character photo from Step 2.
Step 3c: Set aspect ratio to match the reference video. If the clip is 9:16, pick 9:16 here so Motion Control does not crop your composite later.
Step 3d: Prompt for subject swap while preserving scene geometry. Example pattern:
"Replace the person in reference 1 with the character from reference 2. Keep exact pose, camera angle, background, lighting, and wardrobe placement from reference 1. Preserve hands, feet, and limb positions. Do not change the environment."
Step 3e: Generate at 2K for review. Promote to 4K only when identity and limb alignment look correct.
Step 3f: Inspect the composite before Motion Control:

- Label or logo work still readable if the scene includes product

Step 4: Run Motion Control with the Composite Still
Open Kling Motion Control in the Motion Control studio.
Upload the composite still from Step 3 as the character image.
Upload the original reference motion video (the same clip you frame-grabbed in Step 1). Do not upload a trimmed clip unless you intentionally want shorter output. Output duration follows the reference video length.
Set character orientation to match the facing direction in your composite. If the performer in frame zero looks three-quarter left, pick the matching orientation control. A mismatch here rotates limbs even when the first-frame prep was perfect.

Lighting match. The composite still should inherit lighting from frame zero. Pose alignment. Motion Control is most reliable when frame zero is a neutral or slow-start pose. Clips that begin mid-spin or mid-jump fight the solver even with a perfect swap. Trim the reference video so frame zero is a readable silhouette, or pick a library motion that starts calm.
Aspect ratio lock. Match aspect across frame grab, Nano Banana Pro output, and Motion Control upload. Vertical UGC hooks should stay 9:16 end to end. Landscape hero tests should stay 16:9. Mixing ratios forces implicit crops that look like foot sliding and head clipping.

Limitations to Be Aware Of
Not a face-swap shortcut on raw footage. This workflow composites a still, then animates the still. It does not replace a performer inside an existing video pixel stream the way a dedicated deepfake tool would.
Fast choreography still struggles. Spins, floor work, and rapid limb crossing remain hard even with first-frame prep. Simplify the reference motion or move the job to Kling 3.0 text-to-video when the brief needs invented blocking.
Duration locked to reference. Output length matches your motion clip. You cannot stretch a 3s gesture into 10s inside Motion Control alone. Use Wan 2.7 Extend or a Kling 3.0 pass for duration changes.
