A 30-credit Veo 3.1 Fast pass that nails the subject but ends two seconds early should not force another full generation. Veo 3.1 Extend continues approved footage for 30 credits per extension on Picturesque.
Veo 3.1 Extend lives in Edit Studio. It takes a completed Veo task ID, lets you pick which Veo 3.1 variant continues the motion, and appends AI-generated frames with continuity from the last approved second.

What Veo 3.1 Extend Does
Google's extend pipeline is built for creators who already committed to a Veo look — soft highlight roll-off, Google's motion prior, optional voice presets on Fast. Extend:
- Reads the tail of your master clip for motion and lighting
- Generates additional seconds in the same visual family
- Supports seed control for reproducible continuations
- Costs 30 credits per extension — identical to a fresh Fast or Quality gen
Pricing: Extend vs Regen vs Upscale
| Action | Credits | When |
|---|
| Veo 3.1 Fast new clip | 30 | First pass / new concept |
|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 Extend | 30 | Same scene, more duration |
| Veo 3.1 Upscale | 30 | Master is right, needs sharpness |
| Kling 3.0 new clip | 60 | Multi-shot / audio-heavy |
Recommended Workflow
Step 1: Generate the master on Veo 3.1 Fast for drafts or Quality for hero detail — see variant comparison.
Step 2: Copy the task ID from the generation card in Video Studio (or reopen the job from history).
Step 3: Open Veo 3.1 Extend in Edit Studio, paste the task ID, and select the same variant family when possible.
Step 4: Prompt the continuation — describe what happens next, not the whole scene again. Example: `The talent turns toward camera and smiles. Same golden-hour lighting.`
Step 5: If the composite is soft at delivery resolution, run Veo 3.1 Upscale (30 credits) once — do not Extend after Upscale unless you enjoy seam hunting.
Fast vs Quality for Extensions
| Master tier | Extend with | Notes |
|---|
| Veo 3.1 Fast draft | Fast | Cheapest iteration loop |
|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 Quality hero | Quality | Preserves detail on fabric and hair |
| Mixed (avoid) | Mismatched tier | Texture and grain can shift at the join |
Scenario H2s
Talking-Head B-Roll
Generate a Fast clip with a voice preset, extend once for the CTA beat, upscale for delivery. Pair with Gemini Omni Flash when you need @Character syntax instead.
Product Tabletop
Start on Quality with 3 reference images (Veo's ref cap). Extend for the second camera move instead of stitching two independent gens in post.
When Extend Loses
If the subject walks out of frame or the last second is motion-blurred, Extend hallucinates limbs. Trim the master or regen — see Kling vs Veo decision rules if you need multi-shot instead.
Limitations to Be Aware Of
Task ID only. Extend expects a Picturesque Veo job — arbitrary uploads may not wire through.
Seam inspection required. Every extend join can drift white balance; scrub frame-by-frame before client export.
No audio magic. Extend focuses on picture; plan VO separately unless your master already includes synced audio you preserve in post.
Not Kling or SeeDance. Other vendors use Wan 2.7 Extend (16 credits) or full regen.
